SANTA FE STREET
By Carmen Castillo
Synopsis
The illness of my father, an urban planning architect who embodies ethics in my country, brings me back home for my first long stay since I went into exile 29 years ago. The immersion in my childhood home, La Quinta,
brings its share of conflict. But then a "chance" encounter gets me moving again.
Possibly urged on by the memory of the wound, I return to the house on Santa Fe Street. Scene of the death in the struggle, on October 5, 1974, of Miguel Enriquez, leader of the MIR, my partner. Between one visit and the next, Santa Fe Street comes to life with its memories of the defeated, of other militant women, "all these useless deaths". Without realizing it, the quest for the meaning of engagement transforms me. Another country emerges: human landscapes that tell the story of how the beauty of political commitment is handed down over three generations.
La Quinta closes up, without nostalgia, but the "resuscitation" of the house on Santa Fe Street is enough to mark the soil of Chile with the presence of the absent.
